About This Class

This course provides a general overview of the Jewish sects of the 1st Century and their larger historical context. This course will explore the Jewish backgrounds in which Yeshua & His disciples lived. Some of the areas covered: daily life among Jewish sects; the Temple in 1st Century Judaisms; Qumran–Dead Sea Scrolls; theological disputes among the competing sects.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. think and speak about 1st century Jewish life from an academically informed faith perspective
  2. discuss the possibilities and limits with respect to critical reconstruction of history
  3. continue their study of Jewish/Christian history with a sharper eye to detail
  4. to discern good and profitable lines of questioning from poor and weak ones

Grading breakdown: (100 pts total)

30 pts – Forum participation, demonstrating engagement with readings

40 pts – Two short essays (20 pts ea)

30 pts – Term paper (10-12 dbl spaced pages)
