About This Class

This class offers an introduction to the history, understanding, and use of the Masorah of the Hebrew Bible as a tool to aid both in textual criticism of the Hebrew text as well as exegesis of the biblical text. After briefly exploring the historical backgrounds of the Masorah, we will learn the conventions employed by BHS (Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia) in the Masorah contained in that printed edition of the Hebrew Bible. Once we have gained an understanding of how the Masorah works, and what kinds of information we can derive from it, we will look at a number of biblical texts in which the Masoretic notes offer interesting textual insights which might otherwise be missed.
