But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness,
and all these things will be added to you.
– Matthew 6:33
Here is the capstone of our Master’s teaching about the practical faith that marks His true disciples. This faith has a single-hearted focus: God’s kingdom and His righteousness.
Seeking the kingdom of God means having a single focus in all of life’s activities so that God’s rule and kingship is seen, known, and appreciated by others. Righteousness in this verse refers to the very character of the kingdom in that it is comprised of citizens who emulate the righteousness of the King. In seeking to enter into the kingdom, to submit to the King, and to participate in those activities that pertain to the kingdom, what governs all of this is the righteousness seen in Yeshua’s own life of obedience and submission to the Father. Kingdom life is, then, the pursuit of this righteousness, that is, to walk in the footsteps of the Messiah, and in doing so to live “sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age” (Tit 2:12). The heart of the Master’s disciple has this single focus in all of life’s activities.
The promise Yeshua makes is that if, by faith, one puts the kingdom of God and His righteousness as the single priority of life, “all these things will be added unto you.” This is not a prescription for prosperity in the sense of gaining wealth or worldly treasures. What is promised is that the necessities of life need not usurp one’s life energies. Living and working with the kingdom of God and His righteousness in mind means that one can leave the anxiety of tomorrows problems in the hands of the Almighty and trust that He will supply one’s needs. Thus, all things necessary to continue to seek God’s kingdom and His righteousness will be made readily available to the person who lives by faith.
With this understanding, we will explore what “Seeking the Kingdom of God & His Righteousness” means for us today. We live in a fast-paced world that is filled with many distractions and temptations that can lead us down the wrong path if we are not careful. At this year’s Family Camp, we will discuss practical ways in which we can put the things of God over and above the things of the world. We hope you will join us and enter the discussion.
