Winterim Update
Over 200 people attended the online, free mini-course, “The Sacred Name: Escaping the Maze of Misinformation,” offered the week of Dec 12–16, 2011. After students viewed the Video lecture, two evening webinars were conducted to facilitate Q & A and further discussion. The questions were good and stimulated valuable interaction. We received good feedback from those who attended, indicating that the class was informative and profitable. (The video lecture is now available for purchase at TorahResource. See the discount offered at the beginning of this Newsletter.)
We are planning other such mini-courses on selected topics in the future. These free courses will be advertised via our Newsletters, as well as announced at the TorahResource and TorahResource Institute websites.
40 Students Are Now Enrolled in the 2nd Quarter at TRI – Baruch HaShem!
We are praising the Lord for the 40 students who have enrolled in classes at TRI this quarter! Classes include:
- Introduction to Rabbinic Literature – Rob Vanhoff
- Biblical Hermeneutics – Tim Hegg
- Differing Worldviews – Tim Hegg
- Beginning Hebrew II – Tim Hegg (this is a continuation of 1st Quarter Beginning Hebrew I)
- Beginning Greek II – Rob Vanhoff (this is a continuation of 1st Quarter Beginning Greek I)
The Introduction to Rabbinic Literature class, taught by Rob Vanhoff, promises to give the students a clearer understanding of the vast body of literature that comprises the writings of the Rabbis. Helping the students walk through a survey of the extant rabbinic literature, Vanhoff is intent on showing the students the danger of naively reading the late rabbinic materials back into the Apostolic era, while at the same showing how the rabbinic writings, if used with discernment, can help illuminate the literary and cultural background out of which the ekklesia emerged.
The two classes taught by Tim Hegg (Intro to Hermeneutics & Differing Worldviews) compliment each other as the students are pressed to understand the various approaches, both to the Scriptures and worldviews, that gave rise to widely different interpretations of the Scirptures as well as divergent approaches to life in general. In both classes, the students will be challenged to see how viewing life through God's revelation in the Scriptures is the only way to realize the purpose for which we have been created and brought close to Him through faith in our Messiah, Yeshua.
Our language classes continue (Hebrew & Greek), giving students the necessary skills to look into the Scriptures in their original languages. We count it a high privilege to be able to open the door of the biblical languages to our students!
In all of our classes, we seek to ground the students in the absolute authority of the Scriptures, teaching them to assess the value of all other literature (both ancient and modern) in the light of the unchanging standard of the Bible.
We Are Thankful for Your Support!
As we recap the 1st Quarter of classes at TRI, we are deeply grateful for all of you who have partnered with us to make this educational endeavor a reality. Your financial support and your prayers on our behalf have been evidence of God's sustaining hand as we completed the first Quarter.
Here are some of the petitions that bring to the Almighty in our prayers:
- That He would provide the financial means
- to bring Rob Vanhoff on as a full-time Instructor. This is vitally needed as we plan for the 2nd year of classes (beginning in the Fall of 2012).
- to purchase needed computer equipment and software so that projects can be shared among the current staff
- That our instruction would help strengthen the faith of our students and give them important tools that will help them serve others within their respective Torah communities.
- That we would have God's direction and wisdom as we continue to plan for the future of TRI
As the Almighty brings us to your mind, would you also pray for us in these specific matters?
We know that God's work, done God's way, never lacks God's support!
“The mind of the prudent acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.”
